The Teletronix LA-2A Classic Leveling Amplifier is a reissue of the optical tube compressor that Teletronix founder Jim Lawrence developed in the early 1960s. It uses a tube-driven electro-optical attenuator, which reacts instantly to the signal without adding harmonic distortion. The controls are kept simple, and the unit provides up to 40 dB of gain limiting.
Each unit is point-to-point hand-wired at Universal Audio's Custom Shop in Santa Cruz, California. Components are checked for authenticity, so the unit follows the original in design, manufacturing and performance. Metering shows either gain reduction or output level in dB.
Connections are made through Jones barrier terminals and XLR connectors, with a balanced stereo interconnection. Input and output impedance can be set to 50, 150, 250 or 600 ohms. The chassis is a 3U, 19-inch rackmount and runs on 120/240 V mains.
