Sequential Tempest
Tempest is a discontinued analog drum machine designed by Dave Smith and Roger Linn, built around six analog synthesis voices and a performance-focused sequencer. It suits players who want to build and rearrange beats live and also use it as a six-voice analog synth.
- Six analog voices, each with 2 analog + 2 digital oscillators
- Curtis analog low-pass filter (2/4-pole) plus analog high-pass
- 16 pressure- and velocity-sensitive lit pads in a 2 x 8 layout
- Six individual voice outs, main outs, headphones, MIDI, USB
- Discontinued; 650 sound program locations

Tempest generates its sounds with six analog voices. Each voice has two analog oscillators, two digital oscillators with a bank of over 450 samples and waveforms, a sub-octave generator, a Curtis analog low-pass filter, an analog high-pass filter, an analog VCA with feedback, five envelopes and two LFOs. Although tuned for drum sounds, it can also play tuned parts and works as a six-voice analog keyboard synth.
The operating system is designed so a beat can be recorded, edited, rearranged and tweaked without stopping playback. Sixteen lit pads, sensitive to pressure and velocity, sit in a 2 x 8 layout and serve for playing sounds, step programming, tuned notes and arranging beats. Two touch sliders record note or beat-wide parameter changes. Effects include an analog compressor and distortion on the main mix, plus sequencer-based delay and stutter, and adjustable swing.
For connections it has main stereo outputs, six individual stereo voice outputs, a headphone output, two pedal or control voltage inputs, MIDI in and out, and USB.
