The Viking plays only standard Redbook CDs and does not upsample or otherwise alter the signal. A slot-in drive with a dedicated laser reads the disc, and an in-house DAC converts the data to analogue. Drive and DAC are timed by a discrete master clock built around a low phase noise quartz crystal and SoundEngine technology, which is intended to keep jitter to a minimum.
The analog stage was designed for this model and uses an analog low pass filter and LineDriver technology for a fully balanced output. A low-noise OLED display is used, and the auto-standby function can be configured. The casework is styled to match the P30A and H30A.
Outputs are one balanced XLR pair, one unbalanced RCA pair and one true 75 Ohm BNC digital output. The player ships with the aluminum RC8 remote, which can also operate other Hegel products. It won the EISA High-End CD Player award for 2023-2024.
