The Cloud 44 Midnight is a passive ribbon microphone with a figure-8 polar pattern, built around an ultra-thin ribbon element that is hand-tuned and corrugated with a proprietary technique so it keeps its shape under high sound pressure levels. It is described as a modern take on the classic RCA 44 ribbon design and is made by hand in Tucson, Arizona.
Being passive, it needs external preamp gain. A Midnight Edition Cloudlifter CL-1 is included and can be placed in the signal chain to add up to +25 dB of clean gain, which helps with quieter sources. On louder sources or close-miked work the microphone can be used without it. Typical uses include lead and background vocals, guitar amplifiers, drum overheads, spaced, Blumlein or mid-side pairs, room miking, percussion, brass, woodwinds and classical ensembles.
The microphone connects through a standard XLR connector. It has a 180-degree swivel mount and an internal shock mounting system. The ribbon element carries a 2-year warranty, and other parts have a limited lifetime warranty with registration.
