The A1 is a two-speaker desktop system sold as a pair: a powered left speaker and a passive right speaker joined by the supplied speaker wire. Each speaker has a 2.75" aramid fiber woofer and a 0.75" silk dome tweeter, driven by a built-in Class D amplifier rated at 15W RMS per channel (30W peak per channel, 60W total peak, AES).
Source devices connect either wirelessly over Bluetooth or through a stereo mini-jack input on the rear panel. Bluetooth supports aptX, AAC and the default SBC codec, with a stated range of up to 100 ft. Through Bluetooth the speaker's built-in DAC handles the conversion instead of the source device. Use with the Audioengine W3 Audio Adapter or B-Fi Multiroom Music Streamer is also supported.
The rear panel of the powered speaker carries volume/power, the mini-jack input, a subwoofer output, the output to the passive speaker, a pair button and the power inlet. The subwoofer output allows a powered subwoofer to be added for extra bass. The makers suggest it for home production, mixing, turntable and computer listening.
