The Tone Beast TB12 is a one-channel discrete analog mic preamp modelled on the 12-style preamps used in many classic American recordings. It can be used with microphones or instruments to add gain, harmonics and tone shaping ahead of an audio interface, and it can run from clean and punchy to more saturated, vintage-sounding settings.
The voicing is adjustable with several switches. A tone control alters the input transformer to add air or sheen to the top end, which suits ribbon or darker microphones. Two output transformer materials are offered: steel gives a more rolled-off tone with tighter mids, while nickel is flatter and exposes more lows and highs. Two op-amp options give either a cleaner or a more vintage voice, a difference that becomes more noticeable as the preamp is driven harder.
A switchable 80 Hz high-pass filter removes unwanted low-frequency noise from the source before recording. The unit is suggested for vocals, drums, bass and electric guitar.
