The 676 pairs a tube mic/line preamp with a FET compressor in a single 2U rack chassis. The signal path uses custom-built Midas transformers and two tube types, 12AX7/ECC83S and 12AT7/6072. It is based on the 6176 channel strip design.
The preamp section has controls for input gain, impedance and polarity, plus a high or low frequency shelf and high or low boost/cut. A Join/Split switch lets the preamp run on its own, and the preamp and compressor can be wired up independently of each other.
The compressor has an attack time of 20 to 800 microseconds and an adjustable release of 50 to 1100 milliseconds. A vintage-style meter shows gain reduction and output level. Settings range from slow, smooth levelling for vocals to fast, aggressive action for drums and bass. The chassis can sit in a rack case for location recording or live sound.
