The KANN CUBE is a Wolf Gray aluminium portable player built around two ESS ES9038PRO 8-channel DACs, one for each stereo channel. It plays PCM up to 32-bit/384kHz and native DSD up to DSD256, and it supports MQA from Tidal Masters, local files, external USB and ripped MQA-CDs. Local formats include WAV, FLAC, MP3, AAC, ALAC, AIFF, DFF and DSF.
Three gain settings (High, Mid and Low) are available. At High, the headphone outputs reach 6Vrms unbalanced and 12Vrms balanced with no load. It is also the first Astell&Kern player with a 5-pin mini XLR output, which is specified at 128dB signal-to-noise and gives a simple balanced link to home systems and active speakers via a mini XLR to 3-pin XLR cable.
Outputs are 3.5mm unbalanced, 2.5mm balanced (4-pole only), a 3.5mm optical out and the mini XLR. A USB Type-C port serves as a PC/Mac input and for fast charging. The player has 128GB of built-in memory, a microSD slot taking up to 1TB, 2.4GHz Wi-Fi, and OTA firmware updates. The 7,400mAh battery runs up to about 9 hours.
